Obituary for Billy D. Smallwood

Billy D. Smallwood, age 90, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at Monmouth Nursing Home on Sunday, April 29th, 2018 surrounded by his loving wife and children. Billy, the son of C. Roy and Madeline M. Estill Smallwood, was born on February 22, 1928, in Monmouth, Illinois. Bill was raised in Monmouth, where he attended Monmouth Public Schools and graduated from Monmouth High School with the class of 1946. Bill enlisted in the Navy, honorably serving his country as an aviation metalsmith from 1946-48 and continued in the Reserves. He attended and graduated from Monmouth College in 1952. Bill married Erma J. Norris on July 3, 1950. She survives. He began work with his father-in-law, Halsey Norris at Norris Office Equipment in Monmouth. He became the manager and later the owner. Bill also served as a Monmouth volunteer fireman. Bill was a long-time member, past president, and Paul Harris Fellow of the Monmouth Rotary Club. He also wrote its newsletter for years. He was known as the “master of the sauce” for the Annual Rotary Bar-B-Que Dinner. Bill served as president of the Monmouth Chamber of Commerce from 1980-81. The Monmouth Jaycees awarded Bill the Outstanding Boss of the Year as well as their Distinguished Service Award. Excelling in track all his life, he ran for high school, college and Navy track teams. More recently, Bill was proud to have competed internationally in U.S. Masters, World Veterans and U.S. National Senior Olympics. Many of his records still stand. He enjoyed reading, motorcycles and woodworking. In retirement Bill made beautiful stained glass pieces for family members. He was a man of great faith and served his church in many roles. He was a member of Gideons International.

He is survived by Erma, his wife of 67 years, and his children Mary Ann (David) Armstrong of Chicago, Illinois, John (Terry) Smallwood of Monmouth and Susan (Terry) Schilson of Boone, North Carolina. There are ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in his death by his parents and one brother, James.

A funeral service for Billy D. Smallwood will be at 11 a.m. on Friday May 11 at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth with interment in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends and family will be received by the Smallwoods from 10-11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Memorial funds are suggested for Harbor Light Hospice or Jamison Center of Monmouth.
