Obituary for Richard L. "Dick" Speer

Richard L. "Dick" Speer, age 91, of Kirkwood, Illinois, passed away at 4:03 P.M. on Monday, April 30, 2018 at Monmouth Nursing Home in Monmouth, Illinois. He was born on August 16, 1926 in Kirkwood, Illinois, the son of Thomas "Roscoe" and Hazel Vera (Lanphere) Speer. Dick rode his pony Billy to Coonville Elementary School and then drove a Model T to Kirkwood High School. He went to University of Illinois on the GI Bill earning a BS in
Agriculture. His name is on the Bronze Tablet at University of Illinois for 1951. He served in the United States Army, where he played saxophone in the Second Army Military Band from 1946-48 at Fort Mason and Camp Stoneman in California. On July 3, 1954, Dick married Jane Ann "Jan" Peasley in LaHarpe, Illinois and she is surviving. Dick was born into a farming family, loved farming and farmed into his late seventies. He was a Conservation Farmer of the year in Henderson County. Upon retirement he was the landlord for the sons and grandsons of two of his close childhood friends. He also worked for the US Census and FmHA during the 1980s. He was active in the Masonic fraternity as a member of A. Lincoln Lodge #518 (Past Master), Warren Chapter #30, Illinois Council #1, Galesburg Commandery #8, and the Knoxville Chapter Order of Eastern Star #880. He grew up in the First Presbyterian Church in Monmouth and was a member of Faith United Presbyterian. He served as a Deacon at Faith United Presbyterian Church, a board member of the Warren County Library, and both participated and served in various other organizations. During his residency at Monmouth Nursing Home he also attended Grace Bible Church. Dick was a lifelong learner. He read extensively and attended many Elderhostels with Jan. He kept abreast of the news and read both National Geographic and Smithsonian until quite recently. He wrote (and published) short stories about his childhood in rural Illinois. He and Jan enjoyed traveling. He was a favorite of his nieces and nephews. He was an inspiration to his children and especially to his grandchildren. Dick is survived by his children Deb (Larry) Lawson of Princeton, IL, Dave (Ann) Speer of Melbourne, FL, Dan (Katy) Speer rural of Kirkwood, IL, Grandchildren Hazel (Emmet) Sims of Compton, IL, Dr. Lucinda (Dr. Josh Miller) Lawson of Cincinnati, OH, Joan (Clark) Simpson of Princeton, IL, George (Christine) Lawson of Tinley Park, IL, and William Lawson of McHenry, IL, nine great grandchildren, and his Sister in Law Pat Hall of IA. Dick is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death his parents, sister Marian Hall, brothers in law Ralph Hall and Don Hall, and granddaughter Emily Speer.

A memorial service is planned for 4:15 P.M. on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Dick's family will be present from 2:00-4:00 P.M. prior to the service to receive friends. A Masonic Service will be held at 4:00 at the Church. Memorials are being established for Faith United Presbyterian Church, the Illinois Masonic Outreach, or the Kirkwood Senior Center.
