Monmouth

The facility in Monmouth, IL is the original and most traditional of the two facilities offered by Turnbull Funeral Homes.

It was initially built by David and Ada Turnbull, founders of the firm, to offer an alternative place for families to have the funeral for their loved ones. The original building was built on the corner of South Main Street at East Second Avenue in Monmouth, IL. It was built of brick as a residence spacious enough to accommodate their clientele's needs. The room where the embalming was done was in the basement corner area of the residence, and the funeral and parlor areas were complimented by a large surrounding porch and entrance.

The second floor accommodated the sleeping quarters for the family. In the next twenty years the business escalated and necessitated a major renovation done in 1928. At this time, about half of the original north portion of the structure was raised, and a new structure to accommodate the funeral business was erected on site along Second Avenue. This allowed the funerals to be done in the new structure and the family living in the south portion of the building. This new mortuary offered a large central room for funerals and a smaller family room and entrance area ajoined by a common hall. The preparation room and casket selection rooms were on the second floor and accessed by an elevator.

In 1974 another major renovation occurred with the addition of a full service room ajoining the great room of the funeral home. This room today is an additional visitation room and offers seating at larger services. Canopies and a covered drive way have been added to accommodate in inclement weather.

The funeral home over the years has been remodeled and renovated at various times to reflect the needs and life styles of the community. It is decorated with fine woodwork and a large central chandelier in the great room. It is equipped with a piano and pipe organ as well as a modern sound system and video presentation equipment. The interior decoration at Turnbulls has been done to appeal to all walks of life, not being overly opulent yet striving to be quite tastefully appealing to all. There is but one step on the corner entryway and numerous accesses to the facility. A parking lot is provided to the East of the facility with additional parking in the city parking area just across Second Avenue.
