Gertrude Ann "Gertie" Bailey-Scott, age 83, of Oklahoma City, OK and formerly of Olivehurst/Marysville, CA. and Monmouth, IL. passed away at 10:40 AM on Monday, December 2, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City, OK. She was born on Sunday, April 12, 1936 in Monmouth, Illinois, the third daughter of Walter Lee Edward and Evelyn (Ford) Bailey. Gertrude accepted Christ at an early age and attended Calvary Baptist Church. Gertie was reared in Monmouth and attended the public school system and graduated from Monmouth High School. Gertie was previously married to Cornelius Lane Scott.
Scott proudly served her Country, enlisting in the United States Army in April of 1959. She attended the Womens Army Fitzsimons Medical Center in Aurora, CO. She did additional training at the Walter L. Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC. and completed the Medical Specialist and Advanced Procedures training. Scottie served as a WAC for 7 plus years with E6 ranking. She earned a Good Conduct Medal with two devices.
Affectionately known as Scottie, she worked for over 40 years as a nurse. In 1971 she completed the Practical Nurse Program in Galesburg IL. She was employed at Community Memorial Hospital in Monmouth, Illinois as an LPN for several years. After moving, she also worked as an LVN 18 years between Olivehurst Accountant Hospitals, Yuba Sutter Hospital in Yuba City and Ride Out Surgical Hospital in Marysville, California.
Gertie was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Marysville, C.A. She also was a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Golden Crown Chapter 21 of Monmouth, IL. Her hobbies included bowling, softball, gardening, travel, shopping, listening to different genres of music and teaching young family members and friends life lessons.
Gertie is survived by: Her only child Jay C. and his wife Evonne Raglin Scott of Ft. Worth, TX. Her remaining siblings are Marian L. Burton (Paul) of Monmouth, IL, Charlie F. Bailey (Velvet) of East Moline, IL and Faith O. Williams of Oklahoma City , OK, a host of nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter Lee Edward and Evelyn Ford Bailey, siblings, Jessie “Willard” Rollins, Adeline L. Burton, Barbara M. Coleman, Richard T. Bailey, brother in-laws Roy Coleman and Jobie Williams Jr., one nephew Alan Coleman, George H. White(Jay’s Father) and her longtime companion, Pet child “Lady”
A Homegoing service is planned for 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Her family plans visitation from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, December 13, 2019 at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be at Monmouth Cemetery following the service. A memorial fund is being established and will be named at a later date.
