Charles Nafziger Obituary

 

Charles L. Nafziger, age 84, of Oquawka, Illinois passed away at 9:15pm on August 31, 2021 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. Charlie was born on November 11, 1936 in West Burlington, Iowa and was the son of Menno J. and Anna B. Rich Nafziger. Charlie was raised in West Burlington where he attended local school. He married Carla Faye Schmidt on October 31, 1957 in Napa, California. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2017. Charlie served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958 and was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. He served on the West Burlington Fire Department from 1966 to 1978. He and Carla moved from West Burlington to Oquawka, Illinois in 1992.Charlie was retired from Champion Spark Plugs in Burlington where he was employed many years. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in West Burlington, Iowa and is a past member of the Burlington Eagles Club and the Veteran's of Foreign War Post in Burlington, Iowa. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, camping, playing cards, and "drinkin beer". He was a good man with a kind heart and will be deeply missed by all. He is survived by his daughter, Marla Grooms and Scot of Burlington, granddaughter, Anita Bachtell and Jacob of Burlington, Iowa and his grandson, Tyler Grooms and Amber of Ft.Madison, Iowa. There are two great grandchildren, Ginger and Layne Grooms, and one sister, Janet Hagemier and Richard of Burlington, Iowa and one brother Donald Nafziger and Wanda in Danville, Iowa.  A number of Nieces and Nephews are also surviving. He is preceded in his death by his parents, wife Carla and son, Mark  and five brothers, Ed, Rex, Dwight, Arlie, and Larry and six sisters, Helen, Betty, Mildred, Joan, Mary, and Nancy. 

A graveside memorial service is being planned at 3:00 pm on Friday September 10, 2021 at the Oquawka Cemetery next to his wife. Cremation is being accorded and no visitation or viewing is planned. A memorial fund is being established for his church St. Paul United Church of Christ in West Burlington, Iowa. Turnbul Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of his care.
