Edwin Johnson Obituary

Edwin "Swede" Johnson, age 92, of Biggsville, Illinois; passed away at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab. in Stronghurst, Illinois on Saturday December 26, 2020 at 2:40 am. "Swede" was born on April 24, 1928 in Henderson County near  Biggsville, IL and is the son of Floyd E. and Helen L. South Johnson. He was raised in Biggsville where he attended local schools. Swede married Margaret Ann Borg on December 20, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 15, 2010. In his early life Swede was a grain and livestock farmer in Biggsville Township. Later on he was employed by the State of Illinois and for eight years in the Highway Department. He later was employed by the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, IA. He also has served twenty-three years as Road Commissioner in Biggsville Township unitl his retirement. He loved the game of golf, and was active member of Hendco Hills Golf Course. He also, very much enjoyed his neighbors and friends and enjoyed visiting with them at Country Fun, Gibbs 66, and the Feed Store. Swede was a softball catcher for many local teams over the years, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. While at Busch Stadium, at one of their games, he caught a foul ball, and received their honors for his skill as an off-field outfielder and has the ball. His family and grandchildren were his main love of his life.  

He is survived by his two sons, Jerry D. Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska,  and Ed Johnson and Dori of Burlington, Iowa. There are eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren surviving. There are two sisters, Loris Blackburn of San Angelo, California and Alleyne Kress of Denver, Colorado. Swede's brother survives, Clifford Johnson and Maida of Biggsville, Illinois. He is preceded in his death by his parents, wife Margaret, one son, four brothers and  one sister.

A graveside funeral service is planned on Saturday January 2, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Biggsville Cemetery in Biggsville, Illinois where interment will follow. The public may pay their respect to Swede from 9:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the time of his service at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois.  Due to the Holiday past and Covid 19 restrictions, no family visitation and receiving is planned at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois. Memorial funds have been established for either the Biggsville Ambulance Service or the Biggsville Volunteer Fire Department.
