Gary Rule Obituary

Gary L. Rule, age 78, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 7:20 AM on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Monmouth Nursing Home. Gary was born on January 27, 1944 in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Kenneth and Helen (Bailey) Rule. He attended and graduated from Monmouth High School. After school, Gary proudly served his Country in the United States Navy. 

After the military, Gary worked for and retired from Illinois Power/Ameren Illinois after a 36 year career. He was a founding member and lifetime member of the Central Illinois ABATE Chapter, beginning in May of 1981. Gary worked many hours, campaigning and raising money for motorcycle awareness. Riding his motorcycle was his lifelong passion, and ensuring the safety of his fellow riders was his goal. Over the course of his life, he owned many, but his favorite was Harley Davidson. Gary also enjoyed shooting his guns, as well as teaching others the importance of gun safety. His was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association and the Illinois Rifle Association. He was a former member of Monmouth Masonic Lodge #37 and the Widow's Sons Chapter. In his younger years, Gary earned his pilots license and enjoyed flying for several years. Mostly, Gary enjoyed visiting with his friends and family. 

Gary is survived by one daughter, Gerri Lynn Lester of Galesburg, IL, one granddaughter, Keri (Robert) Cook of Kewanee, IL, one grandson, Gregory (Jeana) Rule of Abingdon, IL, and three great-grandchildren, Connor and Nathan Rule and Laina Cook. He is also survived by one brother, Jerry (Diane) Rule of Palos Heights, IL. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Terry Rule.

As were Gary's wishes, cremation is being accorded. A memorial service with military honors is planned for 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, IL. Following the service, a Celebration of Gary's Life will be held at the Monmouth American Legion. Memorials may be left to his family.
