Gerhard W Stephan

Gerhard W. Stephan, age 87, of Galesburg, Illinois; passed away at OSF St.Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois on Monday March 1, 2021 at 4:15 pm. Gerhard was born on June 1, 1933 in Nurtingen, Germany and is the son of Adolf and Christiane Stephan. He was raised in Nurtingen where he attended local school and came to the United States in the late 1950s where he became a United States Citizen, and earned his General Education Degree. He married Marie A. Stewart on May 9, 1959 in Galesburg, Illinois. She preceded him in death in March of 2004. Gerhard worked for Scandia Bakery in Galesburg where her met his future wife Marie. He later went to work for HyVee Food in Burlington, Iowa until he and his nephew, Marty Hackspacher, opened the Pastry Palace in Monmouth, Illinois. He finished his baking career part time at HyVee Food in Burlington, Iowa.  Survivors include his daughter, Mary Daniel (Gary), Son, Richard Stephan (Kelly), and his 3 grandchildren, Sister Margaret Hackspacher, and long time companion Colleen Weinberg.  Gerhard is preceded in his death by his parents, his wife, and six brothers and sisters. 
No visitation or funeral service for Gerhard is currently being planned by his family. Cremation is being accorded. Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of his care locally.
