Eloise Smith, age 97, of Biggsville, Illinois; passed away at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst, Illinois. She was born December 25, 1922 in Roseville, Illinois, the daughter of Loren A. and Eva (Jones) Downes. Eloise attended school in rural Biggsville and was a graduate of Biggsville High School. On November 27, 1941, she married Dean Smith in Biggsville, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on July 2, 1977.
Eloise was a homemaker. She had previously worked at Brown Lynch Scott, Gambles Skogmo, William Nolen, Attorney, and was the Henderson County Supervisor of Assessments, from which she retired in 1994. She was a member of the Oquawka United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star. Eloise enjoyed crossword puzzles, bowling, and golfing at the local courses.
Eloise is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Bob) DiNobile of Lakeland, Florida, one son, Glen D. Smith of Kirkwood, Illinois, one sister, Marcia Naderhott of Creve Coeur, Illinois, her grandchildren, Dean Devore and Marcy of Delavan, Wisconsin, Kirk Devore and Amy of Altruas, Florida, Jerrold Devore and Tracie of Sharpsville, Indiana, and Jacqueline Smith of Oquawka, Illinois; her great grandchildren, Joshue Devore, Amber Devore, Clark Devore, Lance Devore, and Mitchell Devore, Ashley Yentes and Austin Devore, and great great grandchildren; Brooke Dooper and Leah Dooper. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Eloise is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Winifred Johnson, Lorena Conlin, and Lucille Downes infant, and her brother, Eugene Downes, daughter-in-law Linda Smith, son-in-law Kent Devore, and brother-in-law Robert Smith.
A funeral service for Eloise Smith is planned for 2:30 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. Visitation is planned from 1:30-2:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Biggsville Township Cemetery. A memorial is being established for Oquawka United Methodist Church.
