Merlyn W. Hart, age 85, of Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 2:06 PM on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at his residence. He was born March 22, 1935 in Laura, Illinois, the son of Wayne P. and Beulah M. (Reimolds) Hart. Merlyn attended school in Dallas City. Merlyn proudly served his Country from October, 1951-August, 1959 in the United States Navy. On August 2, 1958, he married Martha J. Lee at the Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth and together they shared 62 loving years. Merlyn worked 31 years at Agar/Farmland Foods in Monmouth. He also worked for Lonnie's Auto for 55 years. He was a member of the local V.F.W. and American Legion. Merlyn enjoyed cars and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. Mostly, he loved helping his children and grand-children. Merlyn felt honored and privileged to participate in the "Honor Flight" to Washington, D.C.
Merlyn is survived by his wife Martha of Monmouth, Illinois, one son, Greg (Stacie) Hart of Monmouth, Illinois, three daughters; Sherry (Thomas) Stephenson of Chandler, Arizona, Shelly (Bill) Miller of Galesburg, Illinois and Joni (Heather Kane) Hart of Momence, Illinois, eight grandchildren; Jennifer (Nick) Potaczek, Abigail (Allonte) Shorter, Elizabeth Hart, Nicholas Hart, Zachary and Sydney Stephenson, and Reily and Sydney Kane, and eight great-grandchildren. Merlyn is also survived by his sister, Janice (Jerry) Ryder of Herman, Illinois, his brother, Don (Gert) Hart of Monmouth, Illinois, and his sister-in-law, Joann Hart of Gerlaw, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Carolyn Thomas, and two brothers, Bernard Hart and Kenny Hart.
A Mass of the Christian Burial is planned for 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth, Illinois. The Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 A.M. prior to the service at the Church. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 21, 2020 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth. Interment with Military Honors will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Monmouth. Memorials are being established for Immaculate Conception Church, Hospice Compassus, or the Monmouth V.F.W. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, all attendees are asked to wear a face covering and maintain social distancing.
