Richard E. " Shorty" Evans, age 89, formerly of Monmouth, Illinois passed away peacefully in Largo, Florida on September 30, 2019 at his residence with his wife and daughter at his side. Shorty was born on May 17, 1930 in Monmouth, Illinois and attended Monmouth public schools and graduated from Monmouth High School in the class of 1948, He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Marilyn A Wolford on December 17, 1950 and she is surviving. Richard was employed for many years as a projectionist and in managing the Bijou and Rivoli Theatres, both in Monmouth, IL. He also worked for years with his brother, Corky working for C & D Electric of Monmouth, Illinois. Shorty was a volunteer fireman in Monmouth for three years and then became a paid firefighter for the Department for 27 years. Richard also was the Chief of the Monmouth Fire Department for four years and retired in 1983. He served on the Monmouth Firefighters Pension Fund for 20 years. Shorty was also a Licensed Locksmith for 50 years in this community. In later years, Richard was a funeral service attendant at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth and was very much appreciated by all. When his boys were younger, Dick was a Cub Scout leader, Richard is a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and has served on it's board of Trustees. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Firefighters Association, and is a member of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association, and has been a member of, Past President of, Secretary for 18 years, and board member of the Monmouth Kiwanis Club since 1970. Shorty always loved his family first and was a friend to so many in our community.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Largo, Florida, and their daughter Deborah Sterling (Terry) of Seminole, Florida, their sons, Michael Evans (Carol) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Patrick Evans (Nina) of Henderson, Nevada, and Scott Evans (Tari) of Normal, Illinois. There are nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren surviving. He is preceded in his death by his parents, three brothers and six sisters, and three great grandchildren.
Cremation was accorded in Largo Florida and his family plans to return to Monmouth and is planning a visitation at Turnbull Funeral Home on October 21, 2019 from Noon and until 1:30 pm. A committal service is then planned at Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery to inter his ashes. A memorial fund is being established for the Monmouth Kiwanis Club.
