Shirley Garner Obituary

Shirley J. Garner, age 89, of Monmouth, passed away at 9:45 am on Sunday February 28, 2021 at her residence in Legacy Estates of Monmouth. Shirley was born on July 18, 1931 in Monmouth, Illinois and is the daughter of Raymond L. and Audrey M. Themanson Irons. Shirley was raised in Monmouth where she attended local schools and Monmouth High School. Shirley first married Robert Melvin and later was married to Richard Icenogle. She lastly was married to Robert Garner and he preceded her in death. Shirley first was employed at Peters Jewelry as a teenager where she wrapped gifts and helped the clerks. She later was a seamstress at Smoler Brothers of Monmouth for a number of years and after that was a sewer for many years at Ralph Wells and Company of Monmouth. Lastly Shirley was a housekeeper for Bill and Jen Felt at Palace II in Oquawka, Illinois. Shirley loved Chicago Cubs Baseball, loved to watch Ice Skating on television, she loved flowers and her garden, and just loved " sweets ". She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's athletic events and her whole world revolved around her family and her dog " Holly "
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Sandra Peterson and Joel of Oquawka, Illinois and Barbara Farrington of Monmouth, Illinois, and her son David Icenogle and Susan of Waterloo, Illinois. There are twelve grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She is preceded in her death by her parents, husbands, one son "Dicky", one daughter, Freida DeFord, and her brother, Dale.

As were her wishes, no visitation and no funeral service is currently being planned by her family. Cremation is to be accorded. A celebration of her life will be planned by her family at a later date. A memorial fund is being established for Beacon of Hope Hospice in Galesburg, Illinois Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka is charge of her care.
