Vernon Mettler, Jr. Obituary

Vernon L. Mettler, Jr. age 86, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at 6:40 am on Monday, November 30, 2020 at Seminary Manor Nursing Home in Galesburg, Illinois. Vern was born on March 29, 1934 in Monmouth, Illinois and is the son of Vernon L.and Louise Mae Sage Mettler, Sr. Vernon began work at the age of 16 on the docks at International Harvester and continued work there for the next 30 years. He retired in 1980 and was a Production Scheduling Superintendent. Vernon joined the United States Army in which he was deployed to Germany for a time and was a driver for his Colonel. He married Norma L. Melvin on November 29, 1953 at Ninth Avenue Church in Monmouth, Illinois. She is surviving him as they have been married 67 years. After his marriage, Vern attained his General Education Degree in Warren County and then attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He is a member of and has served as Deacon at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth, Illinois and also was it's Sexton there for a number of years. After his retirement Vernon also did various other jobs locally. Vern also has been a trustee for the Village of Alexis for a time and is an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan. 

He is survived by his wife, Norma L. Mettler of Monmouth, Illinois and two sons, Craig Mettler and Kittie of Davenport, Iowa and Chris Mettler and Chris of Metamora, Illlinois. There are five grandchildren and five great grandchildren also surviving. Vernon's sister, Dixie Wells and Bob are also surviving in Monmouth, Illinois. He is preceded in his death by his parents and one sister, Patricia. 

A Celebration of Vernon's Life is planned on Saturday November 6, 2021 at Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth at 1:00 pm His family plans to receive their friends thereafter at the church.. Memorial funds are being established for either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Peoria Affiliate or for Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth, Illinois.
